Maple, Oak
and
Sycamore
colonies
run
a
common
programme
so
that
all
the
Beavers irrespective
of colony
have
the
same opportunities to gain their
badges. Our
aim
is
that
all
beavers
should,
in
their two
years as a
Beaver, have
the
opportunity to
gain
all six
challenge
badges
which
results in
them being awarded
their
Chief
Scouts
Bronze Award,
which
is
the highest
award a
Beaver
Scout can
achieve.
The
programme therefore
covers at
least
one
challenge every
term,
as
well as some activity
badges.
We
worked on the
Creative
Challenge in the Spring Term. As part
of this
challenge
the Beavers
had
to
get to
grips with
Hama
beads
and
produced
some interesting
20
shapes
and
designs, had fun
making
tie-dye
tea towels
for
Mothering
Sunday,
and
made
and
ate their own
pancakes,
(and
ran
some
Pancake races
too!) We
worked
on
a
number
of
badges
as well.
The
Beavers
were
given the
opportunity to come
to the
Excel Leisure Centre to do their
swimming
badges before the
Group
Swimming Gala
at
the
end of
March,
where
the
beaver
section was
won
by Oak
colony. We
also
undertook
some
musical
activities
with
the Beavers
listening to different
types of
music, making
and
playing
their
own
musical
instruments
and
learning
two
songs, ("Animal
Fair"
and
"Wee
Wee
Pot")
which
they
then sang
at campfire during the Centenary Camp
in May.
Holy Trinity
Church
hosted us for
two
meetings
enabling the
Beavers
to
complete the
Faith
Badge,
and we also
marked the
200th
anniversary of
Charles
Darwin's
birth.
26
Claygate
Beavers (supported by parents,)
turned out on
a muddy,
slightly snowy 8th
February to
compete
in the
District Cross Country
event, and
came 3rd
in the
district. Congratulations
to all who
completed
the
course and
contributed
to
our score.
The
Group's
highest placed Beaver
was
James
Hudson
who came
3rd
overall.
We
rounded
off
the Spring term with an
Easter
Craft and
Egg hunt,
with
the
Beavers
going
home
with
a
decorated
egg cup
containing
a
Creme
Egg.
The following Beavers have joined
the group
so
far
this year:
Maple

been joined
by a new leader
who
is known
as
Gopher,
and
in
the
Spring
term
the
Beavers
were
assisted
by
some school
students working
towards
their
Duke
of
Edinburgh
awards.

Beaver Sleep-over |
|
Item Date: 25/06/2009 |
| On Saturday
2nd
May 69 trainee
Knights
descended on Walton
Firs for the
Beaver
Sleepover
and Activity
Day at
the Centenary Camp.
Most had
willing
servants
to
carry
their
luggage from
the
car park
to
their
appointed
sleeping
places
but
one or two carried
all
their
possessions themselves.
After finding
their
sleeping quarters,
A

of
the

Course
and
lunch
(Castle

the trainee
Knights got
into
their groups
and set about
making
all
their
equipment.
As the afternoon progressed
they
made
tabards,
shields,
lances.
swords,
helmets,
and,
most important
of all,
a
horse.
A tea break
enabled
them to
decorate
and
eat
a
second shield,
(biscuit,)
and bouncy castles
were
provided
for relaxation
in
between equipment
manufacturing sessions. At
the end of
the
afternoon
the
Trainee
Knights donned
all
their eqipment and mounted
their
horses,
before
entering
a (balloon) jousting
competition.
after which
they were trainees
no more!
Following
a
hearty
supper
the
Knights
headed
for the campfire
where
in the magic of
the
twilight
they
were
transformed back into
Beavers and enjoyed
traditional camp fire
activities.
It
was then time
for bed and
65
Beavers, who
slept
over,
along
with 28
parents
and all 8 leaders.
By
5:30am the next
morning
some Beavers thought
it
was time
for more
fun and games.
Eventually,
(6.30am.)
they
were allowed
to get
up
properly
and after some early
morning
games and
breakfast,
it was
time
to attend
Flag
Break and
the
Going
Up
Ceremony,
and say
goodbye
to
those Beavers who were moving
onto
Cubs.
It
was then
time
for the
Beavers to
pack up
their
possessions and
be
reunited with
their
parents,
many of
whom
arrived
with
a
picnic
lunch
and
stayed
for
the Group
Activity
Day on
Sunday
3rd
May. A significant
number of the Beavers made
it
to
Campfire on Sunday
evening
to
support
Rabbit
in a rendition of
"Animal
Fair".
Many
thanks
to all
those (parents,
leaders
and
others,)
who
supported
the
Beaver Steep-over,
helping
behind
the scenes,
With
the
activities
on the
Saturday,
and sleeping over. An
unprecedented
36 parents
either
slept
over
or came and
helped
on the
Saturday,
and this
fantastic
degree of parent support
made all
the difference,
and
contributed to the success of the
weekend.
Last
but
not least many thanks
to
Owl and
Rabbit
who
masterminded
the
Sleep-over.
Plans
are apparently
already
afoot for 2010! Zazu ( Katie

Having fun with Maple
Beavers |
|
Item Date: 01/02/2009 |
|
We asked
some of our Cubs, Beavers and Scouts to contribute
something to the newsletter. Here is what some Maple
Beavers told us about activities that they enjoyed last
term. The visit to the Transport Museum was popular
although James Oswick said he didn’t like the journey so
much! James Poole and Gemma liked the stamp games. Ewen
said he found all 13 stamps. Others like Ethan, Edward
and Daniel liked the simulator. Jonathan Crook drew a
picture of him on a bus as did George. James Hudson
preferred the trains and Nick drew people in a train
carriage. Jamie and Thomas went to the fireworks and
liked the noises and different lights. Milo, Anthony and
Adam enjoyed the sweets in the coke experiment. Will
liked playing the knocking down skittles game as did
Sophie and Alex. Aaron liked it because he used lots of
energy running. Toilet Tag was popular with most of the
Maple Beavers though William liked the target game. Some
of the Beavers wrote about making their Beaver Promise
and Freddie and James Perkins described how their mum
and dad came to see them ‘get their woggle’. Felix said
his mum came. Teneza and William told us about their
community service helping Maple Beavers each week having
great fun spending time with everyone and helping with
games. They enjoyed the foodtasting! |

Past Events
I’m really pleased to say that Claygate Cubs wiped
the board (no pun intended) at the District Cub and Scout Chess Competition in November 2008. The competition which is held every two years is perhaps
the quietest activity that the cubs take part in. While
play is in progress then it’s very quiet until lunch
time. This year I ran scouts versus Cubs game of rounders. I’m pleased to say that
Cubs won hands down but that might be because we were a
little tougher on the scouts, especially the scout that managed to
hit the FULL mug of tea in my hand that ended up all
down my front……(Probably need to add that it wasn’t a Claygate
scout!) Lion Pack won the team event and came 1st and 2nd in
the individually. Congratulations to all who took part. I’m very pleased to report the cubs (all packs) great
success at the Christmas lights and carol singing. The
display of items for sale at the Christmas lights was lovely to see and brought
lots of Claygate residence to see and buy our wares. All
money raised will be used to buy games equipment to be gifted to Polyapes
Scout Campsite.
2009 Happy New Year!
This term sees a number of cubs moving on up to
scouts. It doesn’t seem that long ago that I was
investing them. The other leaders and I would like to wish them well in the
next stage of their scouting journey. We also have a
number of beavers moving up to cubs. Welcome. I hope you all have loads of
fun. Our badges for the term will be
Air Activities Badge and the fitness
challenge. As part of the Air activities Badge we will be
looking at various different aspects of flight and we
are currently in the planning stages of a visit to Brooklands. If
anyone knows of a pilot, whether it is commercial,
military or for just a hobby, that would be willing to talk to
the cubs then please contact me. In 2009 Claygate Scout Group turns 100, watch out for
the special exciting events.Yours in scouting,
Akela Catherine Hackett |

Explorers
Sycamore Colony |
|
Item Date: 01/02/2009 |
|
The colony has, in common with Maple and Oak, worked on the Global and Promise Challenges, and the Craft badge. To achieve these awards we have tasted Chinese food, identified flags and promises from other countries, learnt about Remembrance Sunday and made poppies, heard about endangered species, made boomerangs,
heard about Sinterklas and tasted pepernoten and made Christmas stockings and a whole host of other Christmas related craft items at the Christmas party. We also visited the Transport museum and prepared for this by examining bus and train timetables, and maps of central London. In addition to this we have played lots of, (often quite noisy,) games. In Autumn 2008 Luke Kelly, Erin Southey and Francesca Foster moved onto cubs, with Luke and Erin gaining their Chief Scout Bronze Award with presentations about Golf. The colony was joined by Toby Abbott, Alfie Cherry, Sam Cherry, Casey Drewett, David Grosse, and Bethany Smith. Toby Watkin and Joseph Clement represented the colony at the Scout and Guide Carol service joining beavers from Oak and Maple colonies in reading prayers. You can see some of the things the Beavers enjoy in the pictures they have drawn. |

District Beaver Party
Party
Saturday the 24th of January was the day for the District Beaver Party with over 200 Beavers taking part of which 60 from 1st Claygate’s Maple, Oak and Sycamore Colonies. The theme for the afternoon was “Around the World in
80 days” and it started at 14.00 o’clock with the official opening and the introduction of
each group and their respective flags. Thereafter we had an hour long production of: Around
the World in 80 days. Together with the actors the Beavers travelled from London to Paris
making a stop in India where we rescued a princess over to Hong Kong and back to London via America. We also had to avoid being delayed by a London
detective who wrongly accused us of stealing some money. There was lots of audience
participation in the form of fishes, postcards etc...Needless to say that in the end our hero
married the princess and won his bet. After a snack and a drink it was time to go around in
groups to various bases. We were split in groups of about 30 Beavers. At each base every Beaver
had a passport, stamped with ink or a sticker to say where they had travelled too. We had 20 minutes to complete each of the following: Making a flag of a country – Making a mask –
decorating a shield – a quiz that tested the Beaver’s knowledge of where animals lived and where
certain monuments and natural wonders of the world could be found. There were a total of 21
questions and a few questions were even tricky for the leaders! (Where does a red panda live?
Well … hum...) After another well deserved break and pit stop it was
off to the games base for some super ball hopping. Last but not least we ended up with our favourite
base, biscuit decorating and decorating the box with the American flag to put the biscuit in.
This base was run by Claygate Beavers with all of the baking of about 240 cookies done by Debbie
Bowles, a mammoth task, so Debbie, thank you very much on behalf of all of us Beavers
and Beaver leaders. We also like to thank Ed Bowles, Alison Cartwright and all the parent
helpers for their support and hard work.Maple – Oak and Sycamore Beavers
