Packs’ News - July 2007   Item Date: 27/06/2007

Cubs from all three Packs have attended two camps so far this summer. The Group Activity Weekend (GAW 07) and the District Centenary Camp. Carry on regardless was the theme for GAW 07. Yes it was very wet! The adventure course was thoroughly enjoyed by all cubs, but it did leave a few very muddy and a little bit wet!! On Saturday evening our campfire was graced with a sketch from Hugh and David H which the cubs were enthralled by! I hope David H has been able to fix the whole in his bucket!!! Thank you to all parents who helped with equipment but especially Dave Gilbert who became a cub helper for the weekend! At the Centenary Camp, cub pack leaders ran a back-woods cooking base (toasted sandwiches and dough stick twirls) which was well attended throughout both days. There were many other activities, and some cubs even had the opportunity to participate in water activities hosted by 4th Thames Ditton 'Ajax' Sea Scout Group. The camp fire was excellent, with Kaa (John Baldwin) taking a leading role in the entertainment and the fireworks display which followed was stunning (literally!). The District Cub Day Hike took cubs on a 5 mile figure of eight route around the Box Hill area. The organisers (Hinchley Wood Scout Group) gave teams a number of 6 digit grid references to plot on their maps before setting off. The weather was fine and the quarry where we were having lunch was a welcome site for all. The second half of the route was just as picturesque as the first and took some lucky cubs past an ice-cream van! Well done to all cubs who completed the hike. The third cub pack, Lynx is now well and truly up and running. Special pack meetings have included a Sausage Sizzle at the Scout Centre and a ramble on Arbrook Common, where cubs followed tracking signs. A number of cubs have already achieved their Adventure badge and all new cubs have now been invested.

Packs’ News - April 2007 Lion Pack Item Date: 26/04/2007

A lot has happened since the last newsletter, not least being the Group Show, rehearsals for which seemed to take up most of the meeting time. Lion Pack travelled through time in a Tardis to visit the first Scout camp on Brownsea Island then visited an early television broadcast, the moon (to see the first manned landing) and England winning the World Cup before arriving back in the present day. Panther Pack put on a circus extravaganza to amuse the audience. All the cubs taking part deserve praise for the way they rose to the occasion and all performed brilliantly. The Group Show was not the only event cubs attended during a busy term; back in January cubs from both packs attended a District Badge afternoon to gain either their Art Badge or DIY Badge – a very busy afternoon enjoyed by all those taking part. In February it was off to Broadstone Warren for a pack holiday with a theme based round this year’s Jamboree. Cubs took part in activities to represent England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. They tried their hands at jousting, highland games (including tossing a cardboard caber!), archery and made and ate typical food from each country (welsh cakes, jam tarts, soda bread and shortbread). The weather was not kind as it rained every day but it didn’t stop everyone having a great time, including the leaders! Claygate Cubs then went on to win the District cross-country run –congratulations to all those who took part. By the time you read this newsletter a third cub pack, Lynx, will have opened, run by David Creigh and Tim Davies – the leaders and cubs of Lion and Panther Packs wish them every success.

Packs’ News - February 2007 New Cub Pack Item Date: 11/03/2007

I am really pleased to announce a new Cub Pack will start after Easter. It will meet on a Wednesday evening from 19:15–20:15hrs and will be led by David Creigh and Tim Davies. We are hoping that some of our existing Cubs will move over to the new Pack to help get it up and running. Letters on this will come out in the next few weeks, so please watch out.

Packs’ News - February 2007 Panther Pack Item Date: 11/03/2007

1st Claygate Cubs finished 2006 on a high! At our pack meetings, both packs started making Christmas tree decorations to be sold at the Claygate lights in order to raise money for Walton Firs Campsite. Lion Pack made their own out of salt dough which they then painted while Panther Pack followed different designs using wire and different beads to create theirs. The designs included reefs, Christmas trees, snowflakes and candy cane. They were very popular at the Claygate lights and some of the Cubs helped to sell them. On Friday 16th December we went to see The Wizard of Oz at Epsom Playhouse. It was a fantastic show with excellent costumes and typical panto humour, which all the cubs thoroughly enjoyed! There was great audience participation including lots of booing and the original ‘it’s behind you’, with two from our party getting up on the stage in front on the audience and meeting the characters. It was a fun packed evening and a great way to finish the year. We are looking forward now to a fun activity packed 2007.
