Lynx Cubs   Item Date: 25/06/2009
The 100 Years Group Camp was really memorable for the Cubs. We made vegetable kebabs in the morning and then sweet dough twists in the afternoon. Lynx Cub Matthew Creigh said he liked the woggle making base best because you could make your own Turkish knot woggle. Another high point for Matthew was when Hugh Gostling told us all about Lord Baden Powell at Flag Break. Lynx Cubs joined in the Group Swimming Gala (complete with fruit shoots and biscuits for all participants). The swimming races were really exciting and were especially fun to watch. We had a visit to Our Lady of Lourdes Roman Catholic Church (the round church on Hampton Court Way) where Father Rob Esdaile took us on a tour. Cubs found out about the main features of the church and also heard an overview of the religious calendar followed by the Roman Catholic Church. The Claygate Clean up was fun. Our group found two odd shoes, parts of a car, an old road sign, a vacuum cleaner and wallpaper sample books. Cubs enjoyed being able forage for rubbish in 'difficult to get to places'. For the last meeting of term we met at the top of Telegraph Hill, played some 'wide games' and looked for wildlife with one of the Countryside Rangers from Elmbridge Council, Hannah Moores. Hannah showed us the best laces to find bugs. We found caterpillars, beetles, spiders, woodlice and beetle grubs. The evening was organised by one of our new leaders, Paul Smith, and was a great success. This term were going to concentrate of being to go outdoors (we'll be doing the Outdoor Challenge badge) and we're also going to learn some really useful life skills (like ironing, sewing and shoe cleaning).

The Lynx Cub Pack Autumn Term seemed to speed by and was full of excitement. The County Cubs Day at Duxford Air Museum on the 18th October was really fantastic. The day was bright and clear and we arrived at Duxford in good time. We split into groups and headed off to investigate what was going on. There was the usual extensive display of aircraft of all ages (including the prototype of Concorde, a B52 bomber and an SR-71 Blackbird) and military vehicles, plus a number of planes taking off and flying round throughout the day. No-one was lucky enough to go for a ride, but some of the Cubs managed to get a go on a flight simulator. The high point for me was the Supermarine Spitfire, which took off then flew low over the runway. It was a really impressive sight and really loud. We met up for lunch, had another explore then came back on the coach, tired and happy. The Group decided that a competition was to be held to design the 1st Claygate 100 Year Badge. Lynx leaders thought this was such a good idea that we dedicated a whole meeting to talking about Scout badges and designing our own entries. Baloo brought in his camp fire blanket to show us, which had loads of really interesting badges sewn on. Each year, Cubs make things to sell at the Clayagate Lights, with the hope of raising money for charity. This year Lynx Cubs made scented candles and gingerbread Christmas tree decorations. Ingrid (a Lynx Pack leader) had all the great creative ideas and we all had an industrious time making then and wrapping all the things we had made. Quite a few items didn’t even make it to the Lights, as Lynx Cubs were so impressed they bought them to take home themselves. Many thanks to the parent helpers who came on our ‘making’ nights to help out. The things we made sold really well and the money raised will be going towards equipment for Polyapes Campsite this year. The term finished off with a games night and some treats. Baloo is great at getting a game going and he always comes up with some really great ones. We had non-contact British Bulldog (with tags) and speed hockey. Then evening finished with a drink of squash, a packet of crisps and biscuits. We ended with a prayer asking for a happy and peaceful Christmas for all our families and friends. Akela Lynx and Robin Wilkinson (the Scout Bandmaster) organised Carol Singing around Claygate. We had several members of Lynx Pack along as well as Scouts and Leaders from many other Packs and Sections, including a very musical representation from the band. Everyone worked really hard and enjoyed creating a truely festive feeling around the village. Many thanks must go to Rachel and Robin Wilkinson for providing shelter and refreshments for the carolers half way through the evening. All did a great job and those collecting managed to bring in a fantastic £372, again going towards equipment for Polyapes Campsite. My thanks to Leaders, Parents and Cubs who continue to help make Lynx Pack evenings fun, informative and inspiring.

Panther Cubs   Item Date: 01/02/2009
Saturday 24th January saw over 70 Cubs from the Esher district meet in Oxshott for the annual badge afternoon.
This year the Cubs had the opportunity to complete either their
artist or communicator badge. The artist badge this year saw the Cubs get messy experimenting with different textures on clay tiles, which have all been sent to be fired and will be returned to the Cubs later. Other artistic events included chocolate making, collages and greeting cards. The communicator badge is one not done very often and proved to be very interesting. The cubs became part of ‘The Esher District Cub Detective Agency’ and worked in teams where their mission was to help Mrs Longbottom recover her kidnapped dog, Pickles! As part of the investigation the Cubs had to use different methods of communication to find out what happened to Mrs Longbottoms dog.
• They used a mobile phone to interview a witness and from the explanation given had to draw a profile picture of the subject described.
• The Cubs also had to design a reward poster for the missing dog, Pickles.
• They were given a video camera and had to film a news report about their investigations, which we watched back as group and proved to be quite a laugh!
• Throughout the investigation they sent Mrs Longbottom emails with updates of how they were getting on.
• Eventually the Cubs found enough information to allow them to crack the code on the ransom note which had been left.

This led them to recover a very happy dog, Pickles to it’s even happier owner, Mrs Longbottom! A great time was had by all and we would like to say a big thank you Lucy Evans, District cub Leader and Alison Menke of 1st Cobham and their teams who made the day such a success.
