GRAHAM GIBBS

It is nearly 60 years since Graham Gibbs joined the 1st Claygate Scout Group as a Cub Scout, and he has held a Leader Warrant for 46 of those years. His membership covers a significant time span in the life of the Group and on his retirement from active Scouting we pay tribute to his long and memorable service with this brief account of his life in Scouting. Graham joined the Cub Pack in January 1952 when the Claygate Scout Headquarters was a First World War ex- army hut in Stevens Lane with very primitive facilities but lots of Scouting atmosphere!

He went onto join the Scout Troop in February 1955 in the 'Hawk' patrol when the uniform was still the original one complete with wide brim hat. That year the Troop had a Whitsun Camp at Walton Firs at Cobham and he remembers walking with the trek cart through Claygate Village into Esher and then the long pull down the Portsmouth Road to the camp; it was a long way home on the Monday afternoon!

The Stevens Lane H.Q. was taken down in the Summer of 1957 and over the next few years Graham and the other members of the Cubs and Scouts met in a hut sited near where Forge Drive now stands. During that time Graham became a Senior Scout and spent many Sundays working on the site in Station road building the 'new' Scout Headquarters.

As part of his 'Service' Badge he started to help with the Cub Pack in October 1959 and continued as Pack Assistant to Miss Dorothy Barnfield the Cub Scout Mistress until 1965. When the Station Road Headquarters was officially opened by a Scout Headquarters Commissioner in July 1960 Graham was part of the welcoming team .

In February 1965 he was appointed Assistant Cub Scout Leader with his first Warrant. He completed the training for his 'Wood Badge' in 1967 and was instrumental in restarting Cub camping in 1st Claygate, taking 12 boys to District Camp at Bentley Copse in June 1968. In May 1970 Mr. Tom Barnfield, the Group Scout Leader, and Miss Barnfield, the Cub Leader both retired and Jeremy Salter became the Group Scout Leader.

Graham was appointed the Cub Scout Leader and over the next few years he pushed forward the Cub Scout programme and the numbers exploded until in 1972 a third Cub Pack was formed.

In 1977 he became the Assistant Group Scout Leader with responsibility for the Cub Scout Section and in December 1978 was awarded the 'Chief Scout's Commendation For Good Services'. In 1979 the Group put on a display of the history of the Group to mark its 70th Anniversary at the Claygate Flower Show and much of the information and archive photo material was provided by Graham.

In addition to his work with 1st Claygate , Graham has made a major contribution to the Esher District holding District appointments for over 25 years. He was Esher District Cub Scout Leader for a year and then from 1978 - 1993 was Assistant Esher District Commissioner for Cubs and Deputy District Commissioner 1993 - 1998, with a further spell as Assistant District Commissioner for Cubs 1998 - 2008. He will continue to be a member of the District Appointments Committee.

Graham was awarded the Scouting 'Medal of Merit' in 1984 in recognition of his services to Scouting and in 1993 the Silver Acorn for his outstanding services to Scouting with a Bar awarded in 2003. At the 2010 1st Claygate AGM he received the 50 year long service decoration..

As Graham steps down from active Scouting after so many years of dedicated membership of 1st Claygate from Cub Scout, Scout, Senior Scout and Leader he will take on a new role as a Vice President of the Group.

We thank him for his enthusiasm and belief in Scouting, and his devotion to 1st Claygate Scout Group over so many years.
