| The
Troop
continue to run
evening
meeting quads,
with the
focus
for
the last
term being outdoor activities.
The
Troop
have
been pitching tents
,
lighting fi
res ,
map reading
and generally preparing
for
GAW and the Senior
Scout
expedition.
In between
the
District Day
Hike
and the Claygate swimming gala the senior scouts set
off on an expedition. Like
the day hike
they
had to cover eight miles
,
only
carrying
slightly more gear,
spotting way marker
clues along a planned route. You will
see
from
the attached photo that they were
still
able to smile
on day one after walking
for four
hours.
The
scouts
had also
managed to persuade
this
local
butcher to part with
four
pounds of his
prize sausages
for
5Op,
all
they had to do was mention
the words scout and hunger!
I was
on hand to photograph the
event and it
was
great to see the enthusiasm
of other adults
for
the effort put
in by
the scouting
movement. Their
next step was to light
a fire
to cook them,
pitch
tents, collect water and get some
sleep before
repeating the process almost in reverse before
setting
off for
the next eight
miles
on Sunday
morning.
The
hike
is a central
part
toward the Scout
Gold Award.
Even allowing
for
the weather, blisters and
having to carry
all
of
that gear
the scouts
had a
great time. |

ScoutNAV launched - As part of the
Navigation badge Ali and Gavin have been taking the
Scout minibus around Surrey with the Scouts providing
navigation. The prototype ScoutNAV is 80% functioning,
although "turn left, no right, err straight on" is a
popular phrase it will not be continued into the final
version! Scouts involved in incidents at Scout Centre
multiple fractures, burns and scalds - Lewis fell off a
chair knocking himself out and sustained a compound
fracture of his tibia, and Ben sustained a scald from a
Billy can of boiling water. Okay these were simulations,
but statistics show that 67% of Scout related incidents
occur on Camp or at the Scout Hut. (Some would argue
that it is safer to keep our child at home! ) We are
showing the boys DR ABC and basic first aid skills in
order that if an accident occurs they will have an idea
of how to provide some initial care. Ask them to
demonstrate how to improvise a sling using only their
scarf. Get knotted, thanks to Ben MaCrae's father for
helping to teach the boys the basic knots, so far he has
learned to tie a one-handed bowline (pronounced bo'lin)
from the boys as well as pass on many useful skills with
lashings and staves. Hide all the matches, do not leave
a single one in sight. The Scouts have been learning how
to light a fire using one match and kindling, dry
leaves, paper. They are not permitted to use
fire-lighters, paraffin, candles or any other additional
aid. They are getting quite expert you have been warned!
All of the above are taught during Troop night by the
Leader team in our new Quad approach. We hope that the
boys are exposed to more interesting badge work and
scout experiences in this way as we are able to address
a smaller group size. It is important that they all get
together for a game at the end, this terms favourite
involves a bag on a rope. The bag is swung at the Scouts
legs and they have to jump over it, As you can see good
knots and basic first aid are essential scouting skills.
With Frost Camp 31st Jan and 1st Feb these skills will
be extremely useful, but hopefully not all will be
required. welcome to Anish Peter Baxter, Elliot Canham,
James Foster, Richard Hearne, Elliot Lang, Theo Madingan,
Jacob McDermott, Tom Mitchell, Elliot Proudhon- Smith,
Alexander Schmidt, Samuel White (Scout Link) who have
joined from Cubs we are very pleased to have you in the
Troop. If any Parent's have a skill that they could
usefully share with the Scouts please let us know. Your
Scout will be able to tell you more about the badges
that this might help with.
